The Cost of a Short Commute

Flats near the city center cost more, but the extra rent is not always wasted. A study of 900 workers found that people who travel under twenty minutes each way sleep about forty minutes longer than those who travel over an hour.

Money is only part of the story. Long journeys also make people eat later, exercise less, and see friends only at weekends. Several workers in the study said they had turned down promotions because the new office was further from home.

The researchers suggest a simple test: before signing a lease, travel to the new office from that address at eight on a Monday morning.
