Should Children Learn to Code?

Ten years ago few primary schools taught children to write code. Today many of them do, and parents often ask whether the subject is worth the class time.

Teachers who support it say the aim is not to produce programmers. Writing a simple program forces a child to break a large problem into small steps and to test each step in a systematic way, a habit that helps in every subject.

Critics reply that technology changes so fast that today's language will be useless by the time these students leave school. Both sides agree on one point, though: a class of thirty children and one broken computer teaches nobody anything.

Questions 29–32
29According to supporters, what does writing a program teach children?
ATo study without a teacher
BTo become professional programmers
CTo type much more quickly
DTo break a big problem into small steps
30What is the critics' main worry?
ATeachers are paid too little
BToday's language will soon be out of date
CSchools buy too many computers
DChildren write code too slowly
31What do both sides agree on?
ABroken equipment helps nobody
BCoding should start at the age of six
CThe subject should be optional
DParents should teach coding at home
32What has changed over the past ten years?
AComputers have become cheaper
BFewer parents ask about the subject
CClasses have become much smaller
DMore primary schools now teach coding
