The great red bridge across the bay has been painted for sixty years without a break. As soon as the workers reach one end, they go back and start again at the other.
The reason is rust. Salt air eats into bare steel, and a small brown spot can grow into a hole in a single wet winter. The paint they use is waterproof, and each layer must dry for two full days before the next one goes on.
Modern coatings last longer, so the team today is smaller than it was in 1970. Even so, the painters like to say that their work will never truly be finished.
橫跨海灣的那座紅色大橋，六十年來油漆工作從未中斷。工人一走到這一端，就折回另一端重新開始。
原因是鏽。含鹽的空氣會侵蝕裸露的鋼材，一個褐色小點在一個潮濕的冬天就能擴大成一個洞。他們使用的油漆具防水功能，每一層都必須乾燥整整兩天，才能塗上下一層。
現代的塗料撐得比較久，所以現在的團隊比一九七○年時小。即使如此，油漆工人還是喜歡說，他們的工作永遠不會真正完成。

Thank you for the price list you sent on Monday. Before we order, there are three things we need to check.
First, are the copper tubes sold in three-meter lengths only? Our workshop door is just 2.4 meters wide.
Second, the list gives one price for steel wire and another for aluminium wire, but the sizes are missing. Could you let us know what they are?
Third, you offer a ten percent discount on orders over NT$50,000. Does that include delivery, or is it charged separately?
We hope to place the order on Friday, so an early reply would help us a great deal.

Wind and solar grew fastest, but there is still no cheap way to store the power they produce. On still, cloudy days the island buys more electricity from its neighbor.
