Notice to visitors
The Giraffe House will be closed from 3 to 17 October while a new outdoor meadow is built. Our two adult giraffes and their young calf will move to the East Field during this time.
Visitors who bought a Giraffe Experience ticket for these dates may use it on any day before 31 December, or ask for a full refund at the main gate.
A street lined with trees can be four degrees cooler than a bare street nearby. The reason is not only shade. Water rises through the stem of each tree and escapes through the leaves, taking heat with it.
Choosing the right species matters. Trees that grow fast often have soft timber and break in typhoons. Slower-growing trees cost more to plant but last for decades.
City planners now also count the birds. A single mature tree may hold dozens of nests, and the insects it feeds keep gardens healthy. Cutting one down removes far more than wood.
Dear Ms. Hsu,
I saw your notice about the Saturday bird-watching walk at Wetland Park, and I have two questions.
First, my son is nine. The notice says children are welcome, but the walk starts at 5:30 a.m. Is there a shorter route for younger walkers?
Second, we do not own binoculars. Can we borrow a pair, or should we buy our own before Saturday?
He has been drawing feathers from library books all month, so he is very excited. We will come whatever the weather.
