Reading a Survey
Numbers in a news report can mislead you if you read them too fast. A headline may say that the 11 of students who skip breakfast has doubled, but the 12 figure could still be tiny. Always look for the total number of people asked. A survey of thirty 13 tells you far less than one of three thousand. Check the 14 too: was the study done once, or every year for a 15? Only a long series of results can show whether a habit is really changing, or whether one odd year has fooled everyone.

The Working Week
Our annual report on working hours is out again. The 16 employee in this country now spends 42 hours a week at work, two hours fewer than a decade ago. The fall is not shared equally, however. 17 staff, who are paid only for the hours they actually work, saw no change at all, while 18 workers in offices gained the most. The 19 of people over sixty who still hold a job has risen sharply, partly because pensions have not kept 20 with prices. Younger workers, by contrast, say they would take less money for a shorter week.

Why Averages Can Fool You
A town reports that the average income of its households is NT$95,000 a month. That sounds comfortable, yet half the families there earn under NT$48,000.
The reason is simple. An average is pulled upward by a few very large numbers. Ten ordinary households and one millionaire can produce an average that describes nobody in the street.
Careful reporters therefore give a second figure, the middle value, which splits the group into two equal halves. When the two numbers sit far apart, something unusual is hiding in the data, and a chart with a single bar will never show it.

Short Course: Making Sense of Statistics
Six Tuesday evenings, 7:00-8:30 p.m., starting 4 March
- Weeks 1-2: reading tables, rates and percentages
- Weeks 3-4: choosing the right chart
- Weeks 5-6: spotting a misleading graph
Fee: NT$1,800, or NT$1,200 for students and senior citizens. A certificate is given to anyone who attends at least five evenings.
