In many large cities, the quickest way to get around is underground. The 11 carries millions of people every day, and a single 12 costs less than a cup of coffee. The trains are clean, and each 13 has space for bicycles at one end. Above ground, buses and private cars fight for the same road; an 14 may sit on the same street for twenty minutes without moving. City planners therefore spend more money on public 15 than on new roads, hoping that fewer drivers will mean cleaner air.

Learning to drive takes far more than knowing where the 16 is. In the first lesson most students press it much too hard, and everyone in the car jumps forward. A good instructor teaches learners to change 17 smoothly, to 18 gently around corners, and to check the mirrors every few seconds. Drivers should also check each 19 before a long trip, because a soft one may burst at high speed. Above all, drivers must remember that arriving at a 20 on time is never worth the risk of a serious accident.
Questions 16–20
16
Abrake
Bscrew
Ctorch
Djar
✔ 正確答案:(A) brake
解析press it much too hard 讓車上的人往前撲,指的是「煞車 brake」。screw 螺絲、jar 罐子、torch 火把都不是可以踩的裝置。

Quiet Cars on Busy Roads
Ten years ago an electric car was a rare sight on the roads of Taiwan. Today about one in six new vehicles sold in the country runs on a battery, and the number is still rising.
Drivers give two reasons. Charging at home costs less than filling a tank, and the cars are far quieter, which pleases neighbors in crowded districts.
Problems remain. There are still few charging points outside the cities, so a long trip needs careful planning. Repair shops also complain that they must retrain their staff, because an electric motor has far fewer moving parts than an old engine.
