Passage 1
Putting a Name to a Feeling

Psychologists say that people who can name their feelings handle them far better. A child who says only that the day was bad may in fact feel 11 before a test, or deep 12 after losing a match. Teachers therefore ask students to keep a short evening diary. Writing one honest line each night can 13 a worried mind more than an hour of advice. Over time young writers are often 14 by how many different feelings appear on a single page. This habit solves no problems by itself, yet most students end the term calmer and far more 15 with the person they are becoming.

Passage 2
The Voice on the Help Line

Every Tuesday evening Mei-ling works as a 16 on a telephone help line. Callers are strangers, yet within minutes they tell her things they hide from every close 17 in their lives. Some are simply lonely; others still 18 for a parent who died last spring. Mei-ling rarely gives advice, because she has learned that a caller in the dark needs a steady voice far more than a 19 plan. When the line finally goes quiet, she often hears a small laugh instead of tears, and for her that sound is a real 20 at the end of a tiring day.

  • No appointment is needed before 15:00; after that, please sign the list on the door.
  • Two trained counsellors are on duty every afternoon.

Students come here when exam worries keep them awake, and also when they simply want a calm corner. Nothing said in the room is repeated outside it. Talking early is far easier than waiting until a small worry grows into a large one. Tea is free. Food and phone calls are not allowed.

ARTICLE
What a Good Cry Really Does

Why do people feel lighter after a good cry? For years scientists believed that tears only washed dust out of the eye. Newer studies point to something more useful: tears of sadness carry away chemicals that the body no longer needs.

There is a second reason. A person in tears is easy to notice, so crying quietly is a way of asking for help without using a single word. A friend who arrives with a cup of tea often does more good than any clever advice.

Tears alone, however, cure nothing. Doctors warn that a low mood lasting for months can affect every part of daily life and should be treated rather than hidden.

Questions 29–32
29What did scientists once believe about tears?
AThey only cleaned the eye
BThey were a sign of illness
CThey carried away chemicals
DThey made people angry
30According to the article, what is the second use of crying?
AIt saves the body energy
BIt asks other people for help
CIt cleans dust from the face
DIt ends sadness immediately
31What does the writer say about a friend who brings tea?
AIt stops the tears at once
BIt does more good than clever advice
CIt is less useful than advice
DIt should be politely refused
32What do doctors warn about?
ATears contain no useful chemicals
BCrying too often is dangerous
CTea should not be given to sad people
DA long low mood needs treatment
