Passage 1
The Clinic on Green Street

Dr. Wei opened her small 11 on Green Street eleven years ago. Most of her patients come in with a headache or a stomach 12 that has lasted a few days. She listens first and prescribes later, because in her view many complaints have no single 13 at all. Rest, water and a change of habit often work better than pills. When a case is serious, she sends the patient to the hospital, where a specialist can decide whether 14 is needed. She also keeps a record of every 15 she treats, so that a pattern in the neighborhood does not go unnoticed.

The Doctor Who Listens

A study in Britain timed how long patients spoke before a physician interrupted them. The average was eleven seconds.

That habit costs time rather than saving it. When patients are allowed to finish, they often mention the one symptom that explains everything, and fewer tests are ordered later.

One clinic in Leeds now trains its doctors to stay silent for the first ninety seconds. Complaints have fallen by half, and the number of patients sent back to a specialist a second time has dropped sharply. The doctors report one more benefit: their working day feels calmer.
