Passage 2
Why Bars Are Getting Quieter

Across Europe, sales of beer and 16 have fallen among people under thirty for eight years in a row. Bar owners first blamed the price. Researchers who studied the change found something else: young adults simply meet in different places. A café stays open late, keeps the music quiet, and lets people talk. Many bars now serve drinks with no 17 at all, and one chain reports that these make up a fifth of sales. The word 18 has almost vanished from advertisements. Whether the change is good for 19 is still debated, but nobody now describes it as a passing 20.

The Slow Return of the Family Meal

Ten years ago researchers expected the shared evening meal to disappear. Longer working hours and food delivery seemed certain to finish it off. The latest survey tells a different story: the number of families eating together at least four nights a week has risen slightly.

The reason is not a new love of cooking. It is cost. When two adults and two children each order separately, the bill is three times the cost of one pot of rice and vegetables.

Something unexpected followed. Parents in the survey reported fewer arguments with teenagers — not because the food was better, but because nobody leaves the table quickly when the meal is hot.
